Day 14

Welcome to THE LAST DAY yes, the last day and we've got all the directions right here for you! The first step is to Go to the observatory. Once you're there click the button at the bottom of the image that says 'Return to the Hall of Heroes'. When that happens you get a message saying:

As you turn to head back down the stairs, your feet get tangled, and you trip and fall to the floor! You find yourself peering over the edge of the stairwell, down to the floor of the Hall of Heroes, far below.

As you are peering down notice the three dots behing the statue of Jerdana. Click them. Don't get all excited, this is just one part of the constellation!

Head over to the Archivist who has a little something to say: The archivist says, "Ah, the last constellation! Go and find it, I suppose. We may as well get this over with.". Well, er, that's all. As if we couldn'tve figured that out ourselves. I just did that to be annoying... ANYWAY. :P

Head over to the Janitor who for once isn't very angry (for once):
The janitor says, "I saw you almost fall out of the observatory! That reminds me, I've been thinking about closing the ceiling again. Our heating costs have gone way up, now that we have all this extra air to keep warm. We keep our boilers in the basement, y'see. I keep having to go down there and adjust the settings. It's a real pain and MAKES ME ANGRY!" He coughs. "Sorry. Been taking some medication to keep me calm. Anyway, if you want to go down to the basement and take a look, just let me know."

Well, what are you waiting for? Click the button that says "Visit the Basement". There's nothing much at the moment though so why not explore around looking for... more clues? Where other to look than the Flat Rock Quarry, so head on down there. :) Before you do that visit the Archivist.

The archivist says, "Wait, I'm sorry, did you say there were only three stars you found in the clue? Well no wonder you can't find that constellation... three stars isn't enough for a constellation!" he scoffs. "You'll have to go find the other half of the constellation, I suppose. Hm, it probably isn't in the same place as the first half. That would be too easy."

In the flat rock quarry there is a rock you can click on in the rubble of rocks somewhere to the left. Click on it and you get this message:

One of the quarry workers blocks you as you try to step into the quarry. "Hey, you can't come in here! This quarry's for official business only!"
The other quarry worker nudges him. "I think they want one of the rocks," he says. "Couldn't hurt, could it? Just a rock, not like we don't have a million of 'em here anyway."
The first quarry worker grumps. "Fine, you can have a rock. But it'll cost ya -- 50 neopoints!"

Buy a rock for 50 neopoints and you get this message: The quarry worker takes the 50 neopoints and hands you the rock. "Well, there you go. Don't know what you'd want a perfectly flat three-inch rock for, but..." He shrugs, which is a neat trick, considering JubJubs have no shoulder.

Return to the Hall of Heroes, go back to the Janitor and into the Basement.

Click the gears putting in a rock anywhere and return to the Janitor and press the button behind him. Once you do that, you get the image of a ceiling again. Keep doing this until when you click the button behind the Janitor you get this message:

The janitor shouts, "Aarrgh! You broke the gears! Jamming them up with your stupid rocks and such. Now I have to go fix them all!"

The janitor returns a little while later. "There, I've replaced the broken gears with new ones. But I had to reconnect the gears to the ceiling panel drive train, and I'm not sure I got them all in the same order..." He shrugs. "Oh well, at least it'll still work. Stupid ceiling gears."

Go back to the Flat Rock Quarry.

Behind the Green jubjub click on the rock indicated above. The workers are distracted: The quarry workers turn around at the noise of a rock being thrown into the quarry. "Hey, what was that?" one of them says, peering around curiously.

Gawsh these people have short attention spans! Anyway click on the rock indicated above and the stupid jubjubs will not notice anything new. When the workers turn back to face you click in the same place where you threw the rock before to distract them. Now you have 3 rocks.

Head over to the Herbology Club. The Quiggle is quite dismayed...

The Quiggle sniffles a little, despairing over his situation. "This Herbalism Club was a terrible idea. No one wants to learn about plants or flowers! Maybe I should have stayed in the circus."

Click the button below which says, "The Circus?" The Quiggle is excited in your interest:

The Quiggle's eyes brighten up as you ask about the circus. "Why, yes! I used to be the greatest juggler Altador had ever known. But after that incident with the Bearog on the tightrope..." He shudders. "So I had to branch out, find something new to occupy my time. Starting all these clubs seemed like a great idea, but now..." He looks around, wistfully. "Oh, the glory days of juggling..." He glances at you out of the corner of his eye...

Then click the button which says "ALL RIGHT already! Just teach me how to juggle! Sheesh!"

The Quiggle spends a few hours showing you the basic skill of juggling three similarly-sized objects. It's an arduous process, filled with hope and despair, dizzying highs and crushing lows. But eventually, you master the art of keeping three beanbags in the air, and the Quiggle pats you on the back. "I'm so glad I was able to pass on this knowledge. Finally, my legacy will continue." He stops for a second, then scowls at you. "Now GET OUT! I've got to go back to being arrogant."

Return to the Flat Rock Quarry.

Click on the two jubjubs and try to show off your Juggling skills.

The quarry workers look at you as you approach. "Bored? Yeah, I guess we are kinda bored. We've been having the same argument for months. Can't think of anything new to talk about. I guess that's what can happen when you're surrounded by square rocks all day. They're not interesting at all."

He perks up as you explain your request. "You want to show us your juggling skills, eh? Well, it looks like you've only got two rocks there. That's hardly a challenge to juggle!"

"Unless you're a JubJub," says the other quarry worker.

"Well, yes, obviously," says the first one. "But if you had three rocks to juggle, now that would be something.

Click the button that says, "Give me another rock."

The quarry workers cheer as you demonstrate your juggling ability. "Wow, that's the most fun I've had at work since I started here!" says one. "You bet," says the other. "This is quite possibly the greatest day of my entire life." He sniffles, holding back tears.

Return to the Hall of Heroes Basement and put in the rocks. Repeat all the steps continuously and press the button behind the janitor like done so before. Play around with the rocks and gears until you get an image like this:

Click around the right of it where it shows in the image above, to get the second half of your constellation.

Head over to the Archivist who says: The archivist gasps in surprise. "Ah! What a tricky bit of puzzling that last clue was to find. And not powered by magic at all, but simple physical mechanics. Well, you'd best be off to find the constellation, then. We have precious little time." Exciting I know.

Constellation finding time, and the last one too! How sad. :( Go to Hall of Heroes, then the Astronomy Tower and Mount your telescope. Go here and Go Here to put in the star data.

Your 12th and final constellation! Your last time... *sigh* to brag. Might as mae it worth something! Time to visit:

Janitor: The janitor shouts, "WHAT?! After all that, I don't even get to see the ceiling all lit up pretty? NONSENSE!! This is ridiculous! I demand reparations! I demand satisfaction! Something must be done! ARRRGHH!!" He starts running around in circles, frothing at the mouth and growling incomprehensibly.

Astronomy Club: The Astronomy Club members greet you warmly as you enter the room. The Wocky approaches you. "Well, aside from the whole drama with that nasty Quiggle, you sure have found a whole lot of new constellations. I just wanted to thank you again for helping us out and being such a great club member. In fact, right now, I'm preparing a new paper for the Altadorian Journal of Astronomy, all about how new constellations can be identified in the heavens. If you don't mind, I'll put your name on it as co-author, since after all, it's your findings that the paper's based on, so you really deserve the credit." The club members gather around you. "Three cheers for you! Hooray!"

Lenny Archivist: The archivist says, "At long, long last, King Altador, the Hunter. You have found a constellation for each of the twelve Heroes of Altador... and all twelve of the constellation gems in the ceiling of the Hall of Heroes would be alight, except that the magical source of their lighting has been shut off."

"However, the Book of Ages has revealed another chapter. I believe that the Book contains a weak magical power source, which reveals a chapter each time a constellation is found. I think I failed to sense it before because the other two enchantments, being so much more powerful, drowned it out. Alas, the magic in the Book of Ages does not seem to be connected to anything else, so it is of no use to us in unraveling this mystery."

He sits at his table, shuffles through some papers. "And now we wait. The history-hiding enchantment is very strong, and will probably take some time to wear off. We should slowly begin to regain our memories of past history as it decays."

The new pages 48 - 53 are now available to read.

Chapter 12
The Hunter

It is a little-known fact that Altador, the Lupe hunter, did not name the city that bears his name after himself. Rather, when the time came to name their future city, all twelve council members submitted a name by placing their ballot into a box. As Altador pulled each piece of parchment from the box, he was surprised to find that everyone but he had written "Altador" as their suggestion. In a single action, Altador demonstrated his hallmark humility and sincerity, and the loyalty he inspired in others.

The heroism of Altador cannot be described in a single event, however. Rather, a lifetime of noble deeds and good character earned him the title of "hero."

Altador was raised in a city of corrupt leaders. One by one, his neighbours left to seek a better life. Before long, little was left of Altador's hometown. The citizens wandered, looking for somewhere to make a new start. Though still young, Altador did his best to help by hunting for food. It was during this time that he began to develop his skills with the bow and arrow.

The townsfolk soon settled and built a new village. Though they prospered, life was difficult without a city's resources.

There were no great festivals, and trade with other lands was minimal. Once an adult, Altador left to seek out a new city, one with good and just leaders. The villagers gave him their blessing, hoping that one day he would return and lead them to a brighter future.

And so Altador set out, travelling from one city to another. Along his journey, he kept hearing similar stories about the governors of each place he visited. Greed and an insatiable lust for power appeared to be widespread, and the governed always seemed to suffer for it. Altador might have lost hope, and given up his quest, had it not been for one fateful day.

Altador crested a hill and saw lush plains, perfect for farming, beside a beautiful shore. This would be an amazing place for a city, he thought, staring in awe across the fruitful land. Too bad there isn't one here already.

And then it came to him: Could he, a simple Lupe with no desire for wealth or power, be capable of founding a great city? Even if he could, it would take many years of work. How could he possibly accomplish such an undertaking all on his own?

He would have to find others who shared the same dream--others who would swear to uphold what is right over what is easy, and not fall into corruption.

Determined to make his dream a reality, Altador set off. It would take years, but he would find others to join him in building his city. In every town he met, the Lupe listened for tales of great deeds, striving to find others who could share in his dream. He would then gather all those living in the scattered villages across the land--including the one he had called home so long ago. Finally, he would unite them under one banner, which would represent truth and virtue... forever.

On page 53 of the Book of ages click the flames of the darkest faerie on the last page of the Book of Ages. When you do that return to the archivist's office and the archivist has more information:

The archivist says, "Strange, I'd overlooked that drawing of the Dar--" He hesitates for a moment, and gathers his composure. "The Betrayer. But you think it means something, you say? But what?"

He plops into his chair and rests his chin on his hand. "The fire in her hands... well, it's practically her trademark. And the picture does resemble her statue in the Hall of Heroes. Except on the statue, the flames are stone, just like the rest of it. Perhaps there's some way to bring the stone to life? There might be such a spell in the Archives somewhere, but the cataloguing system doesn't go into detail about specific spells, just the titles of books."

He shakes his head. "Of course, there are thousands of spellbooks in there... tens or hundreds of thousands, perhaps. I wouldn't know where to begin to find the proper spell. Finding the coordinates for the correct room, just searching randomly, would be... madness of some kind."

Return to the Altadorian Archives and head into the Altadorian Archives by clicking the door handle of the left door in the Archives. You'll need to search for the spellbook.

To find the room with your spellbook, go here, input your star data, and click "Look for constellations". Scroll down to the bottom of the page and look for the line that says "Spellbook room". The two numbers in the line that says "Spellbook room" are the coordinates of the room with your spellbook in it. To get to the room, first you must enter the Archives by clicking on the doorknob on the door on the left side of the Archives. Click on any door, and change the "arcx" and "arcy" numbers in the URL to the two numbers in "Spellbook room" in order.

Once you have found your room, you must start looking for the right book. There are around 30 books in all. To look for them in an orderly way, highlight the text "Altadorian Archives" about the map and press TAB 5 times. Then press ENTER. A page should load that either says you have no found a spellbook or you have. If it says you haven't, go back, press TAB again, and press ENTER again. Repeat this process of tab-enter-back until you find your spellbook.

Once you find your book this is what it looks like:

With a little textbox on it where you have to choose between the spells out of 52,143 spells!

Look at your book and put in the spell number: 29,884. You should get a message that says, "Nothing Happens."

Visit the statue of the darkest faerie and you will notice that her hands are glowing!

Remember that necklace you picked up in the walls of altador? Place that necklace on the neck of the dark faerie, and sit back and just read the story...

As soon as you do, the flames on her hands flare brightly, beams of light shoot out from cracks in the stonework, and a few seconds later, the statue explodes into a pile of rubble!

A loud ringing sound echoes throughout the room, and across all Altador. Everyone staggers back, looking very dizzy, and puts their hands to their temples.

Then the ringing sound ends. A minute later, Finneus, the Archivist, comes running inside. "Oh, goodness!" he shouts as he reaches you. "I remember it now--I remember everything!"

"Indeed you do," intones a deeper, more profound voice. You turn to see King Altador striding into the room, Jerdana at his side.

Finneus sees them, but he doesn't seem frightened at all. Instead, he rushes over to Jerdana, and bows before her. "My lady, I'm so, so sorry to have doubted you. I didn't remember, you see--"

Jerdana chuckles gently. "Of course," she says. "That was the intent of the spell, was it not?"

Finneus cracks a smile. "Yes, I suppose it was. Um, perhaps we should explain matters to my friend over here." He glances at you.

Jerdana approaches you. "You look confused," she says. "Of course, since you knew nothing from before the spell, you have not remembered anything. So allow me to explain."

King Altador puts a hand on your shoulder. "Let us adjourn to the Council Chamber," he says.

Click "Continue to Council Chamber".

Council Chamber

Moments later, you find yourself whisked through a hidden door, and are brought into the chamber where the heroes of Altador meet. Altador and Jerdana sit in finely wrought chairs, part of twelve chairs arranged in a semicircle at one end of the room. Jerdana begins to speak.

"Surely you are aware of the recent chaos wrought by the Betrayer, also called, by some, the Darkest Faerie." She glances askew for a moment at King Altador, who raises an eyebrow but says nothing. "Freed from her underwater prison, she wrested control of the kingdom from us, and attempted to remake Altador in her own image. The cornerstone of her plan was to destroy the history of Altador, by means both physical and magical. She intended to destroy every history book in Altador, and then cast a spell to change the memories of every citizen so that she would be remembered as the true founder of the kingdom."

"We received word of her plan just before she was to put it into effect. It was too late to keep her from taking control of the kingdom, but not too late to preempt her magic with some of our own. It was his majesty's idea--" She smiles briefly at Altador. "--but I was the one who cast the spells. As Finneus correctly divined, there were two halves to the spell."

"The first half of the spell draped a veil across our memories of Altador's history, as well as hiding any writings pertaining to that history. The spell also erased the Betrayer's memory of her very own plan to rewrite our history. However, it did not erase her memory of having conquered Altador in the first place, for this was something she had secretly desired since before the kingdom was even founded."

"This is the spell you broke moments ago, by destroying the statue of the Betrayer. I embedded the power source for the spell within her statue, knowing that in her mad quest for glory, she would likely destroy all the statues in the Hall except for her own."

"The second half of the spell provided for magical clues that would eventually lead you to the mechanism for destroying her statue. I am sorry it was such a long and drawn-out process, but I had to make sure that only someone persistent would try to solve it. The Betrayer has no patience for obscure puzzles, and she would hopefully have not realized that there was a puzzle to solve, even had she come across the first clue. Thankfully, she was vanquished before she did."

"However, this meant that every citizen of Altador--including myself and the king--had lost our memories of not only Altador's storied past, but also our memories of having cast the spell entirely. Complicating things even more is the fact that none of us were even aware that anything was missing. But the very design of the puzzle ensured that someone such as yourself would come across it and attempt to unravel the mystery."

She grins at Finneus, who stands off to one side, looking abashed. "Our Archivist, alas, came to the wrong conclusion about me while you were solving the puzzle. I did indeed steal Altador's history, but for the noblest of causes."

King Altador nods. "Indeed. Fear not, Finneus, for we can hardly blame you for misapprehending such a unique and dire situation."

Finneus blushes, embarrassed. "Of course not, your majesty."

Jerdana goes on. "The necklace you found hidden within the city wall was, as you guessed, the magical power source for the clues. As long as it remained undisturbed on its pedestal, it could reveal the clues one by one as they were solved. It did so by subtly manipulating both mind and matter; magically coercing certain citizens of Altador to undertake certain tasks, so as to provide you with the information necessary to solve the puzzle, as well as arranging physical objects, such as the clouds above Altador or the waves on the sea, to provide you with the clues to find the constellations."

Finneus pipes up. "This hero has acquitted themselves most capably in that regard, I must say." He smiles proudly at you.

"Indeed you have," Altador chuckles. "We will soon provide you with a choice of rewards for your service to the kingdom. You can return here to see whether those rewards are yet available."

Jerdana nods, then examines you. "You have done a great thing, these past months," she says. "We can but hope that the Darkest Faerie is truly banished from our realm, including all she has wrought. Good journeys to you, and may the sun shine wherever you go."

The council chamber holds the twelve seats of the Heroes of Altador. This is where they meet to debate the issues facing the great kingdom of Altador.

If you return to the statue of the darkest faerie you get this message:

You can look at the ceilings of the statues aswell. Going to the statue of the darkest faerie you can see a pile of rubble with the Janitor aswell.

This was a statue of the Darkest Faerie, also known as the Sleeper. Now it's a pile of rubble.

The janitor sighs as he takes a break from sweeping up rubble. "This is going to take forever! Who knew enormous stone statues were so heavy?"

Head over to the archivist for more exciting reading.

The archivist grins broadly as you enter. "Ah, come in, come in! Good to see you again. I'm glad this whole ordeal is finally over. Our history restored, everything back to normal. Of course, it'll take some time to adjust. And I think I'm going to take a well-deserved vacation." He pauses for a few seconds. "Well! That was nice. Back to work." Visit the Book of Ages for the Epilogue from pages 54 - 59.

Epilogue
The Veiled Past

The early years flew by for King Altador and his council, as the city began to take form. For hundreds of miles, Neopians from all over the countryside flocked to the budding city. Its twelve heroic rulers pledged that, together, they would form the greatest and most noble city to ever grace Neopia's landscape. Even King Altador himself, when he wasn't holding court, would help place stones and build walls side by side with the his subjects.

These building sessions would often last late into the night, until the builders' torches had burned themselves out. The one who would one day come to be known as the Betrayer wished to use her magical powers to speed the process, but Altador simply shook his head each time she suggested it. "One appreciates a home far more when it is he who places its stones."

The truth of his words was bourne out by the immaculate care that Altador's inhabitants took of the city when it was finally completed. No one threw trash to the ground, or marked upon a wall, as that would only serve to dishonour and defile what they had strived so hard to create.

Word spread of the magnificent city, and soon caravans began to arrive, bringing goods to be bartered for the amazing crops and fine products that the kingdom had started to produce. Within a few short years, the kingdom of Altador became known as a center of culture and enlightenment. Here, everyone could live out their lives in comfort and dignity.

To insure that the glorious city survived the ages, Siyana, the First to Rise, blessed its mortal heroes with the gift of great longevity. Decades came and went, and Altador remained a shining beacon to those who wished for just rulers.

Seeing that the kingdom was the envy of all others, the Betrayer suggested to Altador that Torakor and his soldiers be sent forth to unite all the other kingdoms under the Lupe's fair rule. Once again, Altador kindly denied her proposal. "Our army is a defensive one, not offensive. If I ordered Torakor to use the army to intimidate others into joining our kingdom, even if I thought that it would eventually be for their own good, I would be no better than the leader that Torakor once wisely stood against."

Although the Betrayer hated having her ideas declined, she could only admit that Altador's wisdom was once again correct. Some feel that events such as these sowed the seeds for her future betrayal. In the meantime, however, the kingdom of Altador continued to prosper, until that fateful day....

I'd just like to say:

CONGRATULATIONS! You finished the Altador plot!

Hope you had fun! ^^
